The Metropolitan Police has defended its handling of an incident in which two dogs were shot dead and a man was Tasered.
The police can be heard trying to persuade the man to surrender the dogs. The situation appears to become increasingly heated before the two dogs were shot.

In a statement, a Met spokesperson said: "Officers attended the location where the aggressive behaviour of two dogs was of considerable concern and posed a significant threat to them.

"A man was arrested in connection with the incident for having a dog dangerously out of control and assault offences. He has been taken into police custody."

The statement added a Taser was discharged during the incident and both dogs "were destroyed by police at the scene" but no-one was taken to hospital.

"This is never an easy decision for any officer to take, but police have a duty to act where necessary before any further injury is caused," the statement continued.
One woman told BBC London reporter Matt Graveling they couldn't believe officers resorted to shooting the dogs.

"I don't think the dogs looked aggressive, they were both wiggling their tails," Jen said.

The Met's directorate of professional standards reviewed the incident, including all of the available body-worn camera footage, and was "satisfied that there are no concerns around officer conduct", the force added.

@Web Diva keen on your views as I know you're against animal hunting :)

It all depends on the situation if theirs is a potential for serious harm to someone without taking action. I don't think any different then a human with a gun or knife with intent to kill in the case of a viscous animal. Obviously, it would be ideal to subdue the animal if possible.

If you have a pit bull that has maimed or killed someone, then "in the moment" I would use any tool to subdue the animal, if that's not possible because you don't have tranquilizers etc, then you may not have a choice in order to save the human. If the animal can be subdued and taken to the Animal Control, then it's more humane to euthanize the animal after proper discussion and evaluation on that case. I don't say any of this lightly because I love animals, however, there's that "realm of reality" check that must happen in these kind of cases. Fierce and vicious dogs, likely can't be reformed and even the nicest dogs can turn on their human's. A vet told me a story years ago about a poor child that was maimed in the face by the family dog.

Our family had a Chow Chow many years ago. Our Chow loved us, but it's in a Chow's nature to protect above all. People should carefully choose the breed of dog for their family because the breeds that are bred as guard dogs require proper training at any costs.

Oh and on hunting, only if necessary for food, not sport...and I don't even like saying that.

l think they catch the dogs and request for their owners to come for their dogs for treatment on vets
Have you ever been attacked by a dog without the slightest chance to think things through? I have and those dogs are not the ones you can hold. It is a normal reflex to switch into self defense mode. If the dog is attacking, the police should shoot. It is a dog.
