Should all police officers be allowed to carry guns?

good guy with a gun
How do you know ALL police officers are good people? Sure they've undergone security checks, etc.
BUT, IDK about the USA, but in the UK at least, there've been cases where police officers with a previous criminal history exist, and questions have arisen about whether or not vetting had been conducted diligently enough.

I really don't, it's just the law of average I'm going by, that there's about 1% of police officers that are no good, the other 99% are great. It's a risk, in my head that I'm willing to accept if I'm in a place of danger. I get your point too about higher challenges of police officers that shouldn't have been accepted due to their background....very frustrating issue with the vetting process too.

It does, and people aren't perce
I just don't understand how it could have happened?
It happens.... and people aren't perceptive enough or do enough due diligence on employee backgrounds.

Perhaps there should be more stringent documentation requirements and a second person to check the job has been done properly.
Either way, some way of holding ppl accountable. Obviously resources is an issue, and collusion to rush the process is a plausibility.

Agreed more checks and balances with more people involved in the process!

What are your thoughts?
On one hand, I think YES, for the purposes of defence.
On the other hand, there are so many bad apples within the police force. Take David Carrick (UK case of assaults) for example.
It actually depends on your job description. If you're sitting behind a desk working all day, I don't see any reason why you should carry a gun. But all cops should know how to use a gun even those working behind a desk in case you're transferred to work in the field.

You are very right on this my friend.
Unfortunately in my country the law allows every policeman to carry and use the guns iregardless of their job descriptions.

I do believe that police should be able to carry guns, especially in this day and age with so many dangers out there now to be able to protect themselves but I feel that vigorous checks should also be taken as well before a police officer is handed a weapon such as a handgun.

There have been too many cases where police officers were able to carry a weapon such as a gun and it has been used wrongly and that is what they need to prevent in the future if they want to allow them to have guns to protect themselves.

You are very right on that. However there must be some trainings and sensitisations on how the police should handle themselves with the firearms before they can qualify for the jobs.
Upon going to the field now the true colours of the police would be revealed. So sometimes it's the bad character and morals of the police that may lead them to misuse the firearms.

Yup.

I'd be keen to see links to examples :)
