Dying in war = hero?

The US sent troops to Afghanistan after 9/11 and then later to Iraq. There were a lot of casualties on the American side. Are these soldiers heroes? I do not think they were heroes. The war was for the wrong reason. However, a lot of American soldiers died during world war 2, and they are heroes.

The United States invaded Afghanistan to oust the Taliban, right?
The Taliban is a terrorist group :confused:

We all know the outcome.
Sure, a bunch of resources ended up being wasted because nothing has been accomplished with the troops having been withdrawn. The Taliban are once again in power

For me I think that the soldiers dying in the wars are not necessarily to be heroes. Most of them do work in the defence forces for their countries to show the sense of patriotism sometimes.
Agreed just as @Nomad and I discussed earlier.

Sorry Nomad, now I get what you mean by wrong reasons. Patriotism, it's true. A lot of politics is about the appearance to the world, often underhanded.

Yes, the Taliban is a terrorist group, there is no doubt about that. However, we have to dig deep into history to see who created the Taliban. The Americans gave weapons and training to the locals to fight against the Russians, and that's how the Taliban was created.

Wow, I'm not sure about that. It's crazy how history can be so different to the modern days. I'll have to do some reading

Talk about how silly US can be with some of their military operations. Look at what they did in Libya 🇱🇾 by killing Muammar Gaddafi just to remove him in power because he was a threat to them. What's the fate of Libya today?

I'm not aware of the situation in Libya, actually, got some catching up on the news to do. Was this recent?

Not to disrespect the dead but I don't really think so (but it also depends on the circumstance and what they were fighting for). There has been many battles our country has fought that I disagreed with in the first place. We go sticking our nose in the rest of the world's business and getting our people killed for no good reason. Think of all the families that would still be whole if we didn't send our troops to go fight over some dumb political reason or just because the president at the time felt like flexing his muscles.

When it comes to deciding whether someone is a hero in war, first you should look at the kind of war, how it started and whether it was a war that should have happened.

As mentioned in this thread already, 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq are ones that I would say are not where soldiers were heroes and I may get some people to say something to me for that.

World War 1 and 2 however are situations where I would say those who served and fought in the war are heroes due to the reasons for those wars.
