Divorce greatly increased after the 2nd World War when women were forced back into the homes when the men returned from the war. Women had suddenly learned that they could be independent of their men and have jobs, earn money etc... The break up of the traditional gender roles also helped increase divorce rates.
I believe encouraging a deep pre counselling for intending couples before marriage would go a long way to reduce the number of divorces. People are getting married to people they shouldn't have any business being married to such persons and want to divorce thereafter.
