Is reading and writing made out to be more important than it should be?

People couldn't read or write for many centuries. I mean, most people couldn't. How do you feel about that situation?

They had other means of communication. We all read and write so as to be able to communicate with others. So, maybe then it was basically a verbal way of communicating.

I know one guy who can't read and write well, and he does good in blue collar jobs. He just compensates with being very outgoing and very attentive to instructions. Anyway, he could probably learn to read. Maybe he's lazy and/or he is too full of pride.
