Do musicians lyrically speak their mind or not?

A lot of stuff is "tongue in cheek" or perhaps they are talking about someone else. In fact, as with writing a story, lyrics are often not meant to be taken at face value. Should they be?

They appeal to audiences in their songs. They know what is trending and try to speak from that angle. There is no point trying to talk about that when most of the times, they don't really mean what they sing about.

There are story telling musicians that always relate their thoughts on a track. If you are a music person, you would be able to decipher when a musician is speaking his or her mind.
