Often people are drawn to strength, regardless of whether it's a good guy or bad. Well, in fact, a lot of women are drawn toward "bad boys". Anyway, though, there has strongmen like Lyndon Johnson whom war didn't help them in popularity, but people like Putin might be benefiting from the appearance of strength, regardless of the type.
