ChatGPT has passed many exams including some law exams. It is able to write essays.
Concerns have been raised about plagiarism, however.
It didn't take long after ChatGPT was released for students to start using it for essays and educators to start worrying about plagiarism.

In December, Bloomberg podcaster Matthew S. Schwartz tweeted that the "take home essay is dead." He noted that he had fed a law school essay prompt into ChatGPT and it had "responded *instantly* with a solid response."

In another instance, a philosophy professor at Furman University caught a student turning in an AI-generated essay upon noticing it had "well-written misinformation," Insider reported.

"Word by word it was a well-written essay," the professor told Insider. As he took a more careful look however, he noticed that the student made a claim about the philosopher David Hume that "made no sense" and was "just flatly wrong" Insider reported.

In an interview in January, Sam Altman— CEO of OpenAI which makes ChatGPT — said that while the company will devise ways to help schools detect plagiarism, he can't guarantee full detection.
This gave me a good chuckle. :D

ChatGPT can also be used as a resource and tool for software development. It can be used to write, debug, refactor and explain code.

The pros

  • It’s quick and easy to generate code using ChatGPT. If you were going to StackOverflow or Google to find a code snippet anyway, why not shorten the amount of time it takes to find it?
  • ChatGPT generally gets syntax right, potentially saving you time chasing compile-time or runtime errors that we humans can introduce if we’re coding from scratch.
  • By using ChatGPT for coding, you might get introduced to some alternative ways of doing things that you wouldn’t have thought about otherwise.
  • ChatGPT makes it faster and easier to learn new languages and concepts, with explanations and code all in the same interface.

The cons

  • While artificial intelligence has come a long way, and ChatGPT is quite frankly mind-blowing, it’s not 100% correct all the time. It makes mistakes just like us. And sometimes it’s really confident when it makes those mistakes. So you still need to check it, test it and debug it-–just like you’ve done in the past.
  • ChatGPT lacks the overall context for what you’re building and why. Sure, it can give you a code snippet, or even an entire code file. But it won’t understand conventions or best practices for your company or project. It doesn’t know how that code will interact with other code. It doesn’t understand requirements around performance, security, privacy, accessibility and so on. Again, as a human, you’re ultimately responsible for the code that ships.

I found this section particularly interesting:

Is ChatGPT coding trustworthy?

Let’s see what ChatGPT has to say about its own trustworthiness.

ChatGPT talking about if ChatGPT code is safe

Even ChatGPT is aware of its own limitations! Just as you wouldn’t rely on your phone’s autocorrect functionality to send an important text message, you shouldn’t rely on ChatGPT for writing perfect code.

Take secure coding, for example. Remember that ChatGPT works by “learning” a huge set of existing data. In the case of ChatGPT version 3, it was trained on data through the end of 2021. Because the cybersecurity landscape is constantly changing, and new vulnerabilities appear every day, ChatGPT won’t have the latest intelligence to inform the code it writes.

ChatGPT has no knowledge of your specific requirements for authentication, secrets management, third-party components, vulnerability scanning and so on. It might give you boilerplate code with a placeholder for hard-coded credentials. If you don’t know that those should be stored in an environment variable or in a secrets management service, then this is a huge security risk for your application.

Ultimately, while ChatGPT is good for writing code snippets and simple applications, human developers have the critical job of putting the pieces together and applying best practices.
I think the ever-evolving landscape of threats to cyber-security is a great example of why AI can never overtake humans.

I have a very skeptical stance on most new tech until it's proven to be safe and non-threatening. Skynet of Terminator comes to mind a lot as this new ChatGPT technology takes over. As miraculous as it is to have AI write your term paper, the loss of the human equation in creating an original document is tragic if AI doesn't have some guardrails in place, IMHO.

100. And that's the stance of my boss at work, as for the uses in software development. Way too risky!

Not worth it :p

I have played around with it. I think it will have its uses.
Oh cool! Please share your experiences - the good and the ugly! :)

Not sure I would ever use it on a forum.
I read on another forum where the site owner tried it. It spouted off misinformation in many cases. And I doubt you'd your sites to get taken down for posting false information :p

Out of curiosity, how would you handle a situation where a member uses chatGPT to post on your forums? Would you ban the member? Delete their posts? I'm curious about you too, @Web Diva :)

You can enter text into chatGPT to see if it was AI generated.
I wonder how foolproof that would be, and how human-like AI will be in the future.

I use it all the time for work as chat GPT can write some fantastic emails.... not rude but that in your face in a nice way lol
That's awesome, and I'm not surprised given that I've heard chatGPT can write essays, raising concerns of plagiarism, as explained above.

There's been cases where appeals have been made against fines, successfully for the penalty to be revoked/reduced, with the appeal message generated by ChatGPT.

I'm not sure utilising ChatGPT for email generation is always a good thing - human connection is vital.
There was a backlash where an email produced by ChatGPT was sent to university students to inform of a shooting at a nearby university.
“Deans, provosts, and the chancellor: do more. Do anything. And lead us into a better future with genuine, human empathy, not a robot,” Kayat said.

@guyyanthony have you ever encountered any failures with ChatGPT in those emails?
Please do spill the funniest

Its fantastic!

i only use it when i need to type a very professional email to a client, or if i need to be nice but, nasty at the same time because i'm not the nicest when people have been rude to me lol so i let CHATgpt do the work for me haha
What do you need to do to provide instructions on the tone to ChatGPT?
If you're trying to say that's possible then well, wow, that's awesome !!

Nope, no failures at all!! nobody comes back at me after a nasty, but nice email from chat gpt so i guess thats a win haha
you can pretty much say "write an email to "Beth" stating that unfortunately the information was incorrectly provided". and chatgpt comes up with this.

Dear Beth,

I am writing to inform you that unfortunately, the information that was provided to you was incorrect. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience or confusion that this may have caused.

We understand that this mistake has caused a delay in your project and we want to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to correct the situation as soon as possible. We are taking all the necessary steps to ensure that this kind of error does not happen in the future.

Please let us know how we can make it up to you and if there is anything we can do to assist you moving forward. We value your business and want to ensure that we continue to provide you with the highest level of service.

Again, please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Best regards,

We value your business and want to ensure that we continue to provide you with the highest level of service.
I suppose you were just lucky that this was the context, that it was related to a business customer?
Or does ChatGPT have the ability to read the initial email in order to form an appropriate response?

Yeah it come read the previous email correspondence and response appropriately.
Wow, that's incredible!
Do you think chatGPT will overtake journalism and technical writer jobs at some point, once all has been tried and tested?

well, you can ask chatgpt to write a 500 word essay on passports..... :O

Passports are an essential document for international travel, allowing individuals to cross international borders and proving their identity. They are issued by national governments and are recognized as the most important document for international travel.

A passport contains the holder's personal information, such as their name, date of birth, and photograph, as well as their nationality and the country that issued the passport. It also includes a unique identification number and a machine-readable strip, which enables immigration officials to quickly scan and verify the passport's authenticity.

Passports are a crucial document for international travel as they serve as the primary identification and verification document. They are required by immigration authorities to allow individuals to enter or exit a country. Furthermore, passports may also serve as proof of identity for a variety of purposes, such as opening a bank account or applying for a visa to visit another country.

Passports come in a variety of formats, including electronic and traditional paper formats. Electronic passports, also known as e-passports or biometric passports, have a microchip embedded in them that contains the passport holder's biometric data, such as their facial recognition data and fingerprints. This added level of security reduces the risk of fraudulent passports being used for international travel.

The issuance of a passport is subject to stringent rules and regulations to ensure its authenticity and validity. Individuals must provide proof of identity and citizenship, and in some cases, undergo a background check before a passport can be issued. The passport application process can vary from country to country, with some countries requiring more documentation than others.

Passports can also serve as a symbol of a nation's identity and sovereignty. The cover of a passport often features iconic images or symbols associated with the country of issuance, such as a national emblem or flag. This serves to represent the country and its citizens on the global stage and reflects its cultural heritage and values.

In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for passports, with more individuals traveling internationally than ever before. This has led to longer wait times for passport applications and renewals, as well as an increase in passport fees. However, the benefits of having a passport far outweigh the inconvenience and cost associated with obtaining one.

While passports are primarily used for international travel, they also play an important role in facilitating international trade and commerce. Business travelers rely on passports to enter other countries to negotiate deals and explore new markets. In addition, passports allow for the smooth movement of goods and services across borders by enabling individuals to attend conferences, trade shows, and other business-related events.

In conclusion, passports are an essential document for international travel, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and ideas across borders. They serve as a symbol of national identity and sovereignty, as well as a crucial tool for facilitating international trade and commerce. While obtaining a passport can be time-consuming and costly, the benefits that come with it are immeasurable, making it a worthwhile investment for anyone who wishes to explore the world and engage with other cultures.

Agreed!!! but its literally from chat gpt hahah
With ChatGPT we may no longer have inappropriate language in this world :D
I'm actually curious you know, could you try to tell ChatGPT to respond to a message full of abusive language directed at you? Just curious what transpires from it ;p

LOL!!!

I'm sorry, but as an AI language model, I cannot respond with abusive language or engage in any behavior that promotes negativity or disrespect towards others. It's important to communicate with others in a respectful and civil manner, even if we disagree with them or their views. Let's focus on building a positive and constructive conversation instead.

Great to hear it’s family friendly 😊
I will have a play about with ChatGPT if it’s free 😎
