Personally, I don't see the purpose of such. It's just an additional expense.
People say it prepares them for the workplace and all that, but not all workplaces have uniforms. Why not just require a smart dress?

I don't even see the purpose of workplace uniforms. It doesn't affect their work quality, and I strongly believe that society's judgement of professional values based on looks should change. You know the saying 'never judge a book by its cover'. Perhaps I work against society :D

Thoughts?:)

The purpose of school uniforms are to send the message of uniformity, conformity, and blurs the social enequity of students. Not saying I agree with it, but that's just my observation. I think there's a place for shirts with logo's in a tech industry where one is going into businesses for identification.....but actually uniforms, in a business....naw, agreed

Just curious why you feel this is necessary, as people could alternatively be provided with a badge? :)

Personally I feel that people should be able to come dressed as they wish. Provided it's at least smart-casual attire. If they need to identify themselves, then they should wear badges.

I kinda feel like society places a certain unnecessary expectation of professionalism, just curious as to your thoughts? :)

Badges are fine too. :) Professionalism is the main reason for uniforms....I"m open too whatever works though, like you.

Professionalism is the main reason for uniforms..
Yeah, I get that. Do you feel like perceptions of professionalism is based way too much on looks as opposed to one's conduct? But that would obviously need some major society reforms... unlikely to happen soon, if EVER

I may have some strong views. Though, not trying to push my views onto you or anyone else, just keen to hear your views :)

Your views are totally fine and well thought, and I enjoy learning about other people's worldviews. If more people would listen and share, the world would be better. :)

I think the 1980's had a lot to do with stereotypes/professionalism expectations and how it should look, though perhaps through time it's waning?

As a kid, I disliked wearing a uniform. I always thought what has uniform got to do with education and learning? I still believe there shouldn't be uniforms but I think there should be some sort of dress code in school otherwise, kids will start wearing all sorts of things.

Me too :)

There were protests a few months ago about school kids having their skirt length checked. I had that during school days too, it was up to our knees, and I never really understood how it's unprofessional TBF, especially if we're wearing tights  I'd say it's still a thing in the UK for schools.

However with regards to workplaces, many offices had no such requirements unless you are meeting clients. Back in the day, were there stringent uniform requirements even where clients were not met?

I still do feel that there needs to be a way to go, with society realms (yes i love my puns :p ), where even if you meet a client they don't judge you based on how professional you LOOK, but rather on how professionally you BEHAVE.

I suppose what could happen is peer pressure, jealousy and bullying over who's wearing the best and worth clothing. Kids can be mean and immature, sure thing. :(

Here in the US, the only schools that have uniforms are usually religious or private schools, in which parents have to pay to let their kids go to these schools so it's more understanding why they wear uniforms. Certain religions only allow girls to wear skirts and they can't wear pants.

I understand that a lot of schools tend to have a uniform so that all the students are wearing the same thing and there is no competition or any kind of encouragement for bullying because someone may be able to afford designer clothes and another child may not be able to. For that purpose, I am for school uniforms so that all kids are equal and there is no reason for them to be picked on for what they are wearing.

In terms of the price of uniforms, is something that is an issue for many, even now, I still have two children in school and the prices for their uniforms have gone up again and they are very expensive and those that struggle do worry about being able to ensure their child is able to be in uniform. I would love to see uniforms made more affordable as this just causes children to get punished because their parents may struggle and that is not fair.

Agreed, I do think there could be more general guidelines as opposed to a strict uniform code though.

I feel like perhaps a cap should be introduced to limit uniform prices, what do you say? :)

This I could definitely agree with, especially with how things are at the moment with rising inflation and prices sky rocketing like they are for just about everything. A price cap being introduced would definitely be welcomed by many parents. :)

Personally, I don't see any reason why school uniforms should be abolished. Why should it be? There's a good reason why it's been means as a means of easy identification as students. If there's any stranger in the school premises, he's going to be found out immediately.

Whilst this is true, with the websites for the schools being easily accessible and the information on where to get the uniform from for that specific school, if someone did want to enter the school and not get caught out for whatever reason, that would be a means for them to be able to do it.

A compulsory badge could be used as an alternative. That saves the expense of a uniform.

Sure, but in my school we had to tap in with a student card to get access into all buildings. There was a policy in place to not hold the door open to anyone we don't know. However, as you'd expect, this was not always complied with due to human nature.

This is something that is not used in the schools where I live which is quite shocking. They do have it so that you have to press a button and speak to someone in the main office to gain access but students are usually let in quite easily and do not have any kind of student card to tap.

Oh, we had that at the gate too.
But a card was required to access buildings.
