What is Self Righteous?

This term is thrown around like "holier than thou", but what is it really? How might someone become like that? How aware is the person of their own condition?

In Buddhism, Righteousness is one of the Eight Pillars. However, it is really difficult to define what exactly is Righteousness. The thing you consider righteousness might not be the righteousness for me. Self righteousness mean justifying your actions as the right actions, I see this idea very flawed.

I think the idea is better understand as being a snob. For instance, the religious teachers of Jesus' day were convinced of their own righteousness that they gained from following the laws of Moses. However, the laws of Moses had to be carried out in a "loving spirit" which they knew nothing of.

Self righteousness often goes along with pride. At this stage the person begins to think they are more superior when compared to others and that they are always right. Often times they are not even aware themselves until someone points it out to them.

Self-righteous people are convinced of their superior moral character and believe they are always correct or better than others. They have a tendency to dismiss or insult anyone who does not share their opinions. When speaking with a self-righteous individual, they are reluctant to consider or appreciate other views or beliefs.
